The holiday shopping season began with moderate but broad gains, led by online retailers like Amazon (AMZN) and electronics stores like Best Buy (BBY), which offset lower gasoline sales. November retail sales grew 0.3% from the previous month, half the increase that was expected, but still an improvement from October's 0.3% drop, according to the Commerce Department.
